Why don't I find this site when I "Google" a topic that is to be found here?

Primarily because Google follows a strict commerce driven business model. They are very successful at it but as a consequence the results you might get by searching there are not necessarily the most useful. Depending on why you are searching you might want to consider another search engine like MSN, Yahoo or Ask Jeeves. On the other hand if you are looking to make a purchase of an item then Google will serve you pretty well.

You can find me by making a Google search but you have to be pretty specific. Try searching for my domain name "tempusfugit.ca" - that is pretty specific!

Why are there not more advertising-free websites

Basically because web designers and webmasters are greedy. Unless a site is privately funded or part of a public/academic institition, then you will see ads. A web designer that is authoring pages for a retail operation may be making a few dollars on the side by placing Adsence banners on his/her pages. These ads quite often have nothing to do with the web site that they are placed on.
