Aircrack - Packet Capture
The aircrack suite is an excellent collection of tools written by Christophe Devine to perform packet capture, packet injection and WEP/WPA cracking.
Whether you want to secure your own network or you want to use these tools nefariously to break into someone else's - this suite of tools looks like your man.
WIRELESSDEFENCE.ORG is a collection of 'top tips' for the auditing of 802.11 networks and is an attempt to provide a 'one stop shop' for common tasks encountered by new and forgetful ; ) Wireless Security Auditors.
Tempusfugit DOES NOT use these tools - this page is for reference only. To provide a starting point for further reading and research.

Running Aircrack-ng on an Asus Eeepc
As Aircrack is a package developed in Linux it is best installed in that environment. The notes on WirelessDefence.org site describe the installation of the Fedora operating system for an "Audit Laptop", along with the installation of Aircrack. There is no reason to presume that to run Aircrack on an Asus eeePC that you need to install Ubuntu The Debian Linux that the eeePC is shipped with - (Xandros) is just as good a candidate.
With the "Advanced Desktop" aircrack-ng when installed and will appear in a pretty similar manner as it would on any Linux operating system. The KDE menu system is actually more like the Windows menu (i.e. it is at the bottom of the screen by default) than it is the default Fedora or Ubuntu menus.
Like the Ubuntu install the installation on Xandros will be using the Debian package and the same procedures can be followed. In the case of the Xandros setup you have the wireless connectivity already configured. As described in the article by Paul Rubens (enterprisenetworkingplanet.com) in how to Build a Portable Security Tool with the ASUS Eee PC and Ubuntu - the wireless has to be "fixed" after installing Ubuntu on the eeePC.
Aircrack will run on pretty much any platform
It would seem that there is an ill-conceived notion that if you want to use Aircrack you need to install it on an eeePC (or that the eeePC is the desired platform for aircrack-ng). This is NOT the case - in fact the eeePC is not the first choice for using this utility, as the screen and keyboard are too small. The only major advantage of the eeePC and Aircrack is its extreme portability.
If you intend to use Aircrack in an effective manner you are better off installing it on a computer that has a screen that you can see a resonable amount of data with. The output from Aircrack is such that there is a fair amount of analysis and having a 7" screen is not going to help you. Also, Aircrack is a command line utility and you will have to enter a fair number of commands by typing them in - A small keyboard is not going to help either!
Another mis-conception is that Aircrack will enable you to access WEP (and even WPA) networks just by installing it on a computer such as the eeePC. There is a LOT of analysis of data and interpretation of that data that needs to be peformed to determine the access keys (passphrases) of secured networks.
A better choice for the installation of Aircrack would be a Lenovo X series notebook or even a Dell XPS 1330. It would be better to install Aircrack on a computer that has minimal problems in the installation of a Linux operating system - this precludes a lot of HP/Compaq and Toshiba notebooks.
Aircrack will even run on the Windows platform, however, aireplay-ng (package injection) will not work. This makes the use on Windows a little questionable - there are also reports that the CPU usage on Windows is a lot higher than it is in Linux. Linux is the preferred platform for this activity.
Aircrack is probably better suited to be used on a Thinkpad X Series or a 8.9" Acer Aspire One (or one of the later Asus eeePCs such as the 900, 901 and 1000)
