What is an ARM Processsor?

In a debate about whether an O/S will run on a platform (processor) or not - you would think that it would be important to know what ARM actually is!

ARM - Advanced RISC Machines, Ltd

An ARM processor is any of several 32-bit RISC (reduced instruction set computer) microprocessors

Such as the ARM CortexTM-A8 processor - www. arm.com/ products /CPUs/ARM_Cortex-A8.html (The new Apple iPad is to use the A9 ARM Processor)

Why when a component is an acronym of a company that developed it - the company is "coy" about mentioning the fact.

The ARM processor was the key component in the development of the BBC Acorn Computer (Cambridge UK) - it (the Acron computer) was in direct competition with the Sinclair range of "Home Computers" - It pre-dates the Amstrad and "Sir Alan's" venture into this market-place.

The first Integrated circuit was designed and manufactured by the Fairchild Semiconductor company (Robert Noyce) - later to become Intel. The first Microprossesor, the Intel 4004 (atributed to Federico Faggin) was released Nov 1917

Re: XP running on ARM
