The Circumvention of TPMs
The study of Technical Protection Measures for the prevention of copyright the distribution of media and the provision of services is a hobby of the author of this website.
This website describes and comments on the methods used and discusses the techniques that can be used to break the protection methods. It is NOT a step-by-step "how-to" - there are many other places on the Internet that provide this information. There are legitimate reasons for the use of TPMs, however, it is the contention of Tempusfugit that TPM's are not generally understood by the average user and are often deployed in a "covert" manner.
Examples of Covert Deployment
This list is NOT a complete list - just a few that have sparked the interest of the author:
- The addition of copy-protection methods to digital media without the purchaser and user of the media bieng aware that their equipment has be compromised (RootKits and the like)
- Application of filters and "shaping techniques" to give preference and possible denial of access to certain types of Internet content. i.e. Blocking Sykpe, Deep Packet Injection and the use of Geo-IP filtering (i.e. BBC iPlayer)
- Kontiki Download Manager - used by BBC iPlayer - DRM is added to the downloaded content AND the Kontiki program turns your computer into a "pear-to-pear" server.
