Tempusfugit offers a comprehensive configuration service for current wireless notebooks that are sold with either Windows Vista or WindowsXP pre-installed by the manufacturer.
The aim of this pilot project is to promote the use of Linux operating systems and to enable those who feel that they have been "held hostage" by Microsoft and have been forced into adopting Windows Vista.
Tempusfugit is of the opinion the Windows Vista is not as bad a some would make out. As such, a "dual boot" of Windows Vista and Ubuntu Linus Feistry Fawn is the preferred configuration. However, Dual Boots of Vista and WindowsXP will be configured as will WindowsXP and Ubuntu linux.
Triple or more booting systems may be configured, but this would have to be a "special".
Not all wireless notebooks are capable of being configured as dual boots.
If you have purchased a wireless notebook Tempusfugit cannot configure it for you. You will have to return it to the store you purchased it. Tempusfugit has no way to tell what has been done to a notebook unless it is supplied in a factory sealed box. The initial setup and preparation of recovery media (for Vista) is critical to the performance of this configuration.
Payment by the client to Tempusfugit is only required when the configured notebook is delivered to the client. The client is responsible for the cost of all materials and shipping.
In other for TF to proceed on a configuration he will have to establish a communication link between himself and the client. This will normally consist as a series of emails between TF and the client - statement of intent and additional details will be discussed in these communications. Purchase of the notebook and software cannot proceed until this step has been completed.
If you wish to use additional software then this should be discussed when communicating with Tempusfugit (see note above). You, the client, will be resposible for the installation and activation of this software.
The recovery media prepared will be supplied to the client along with the configured notebook. This step alone is being sold by one of the "big box" stores (along with the PSP - granted) for $300.
In order to allow you, the client, to maintain the manufactures warranty the recovery media is included in the configuration package. However, it is your responsibility, the client, to restore the notebook to the factory settings (using the recovery media) so that you can take advantage of this warranty.
As stated in other pages on this website, the installation of another operating system other than the one that the notebook was shipped with, will technically void the warranty. This does not mean that in the event of an equipment failure you are out of luck with respect to obtaining support from the manufacturer. If you return the computer to a state with the same operating system that it was shipped with, in this case Windows Vista, then you can make a service call. DO NOT tell the manufacturer that you have installed a dual boot or they will wash their hands of the situation until you restore the Windows Vista operating system.
The terms and operation of are incompatible with this configuration service. Notebooks configured with a dual boot would be too advanced for the providers of such plans.
Sorry, the motivation of this service does not have any interest in just replacing Windows Vista with XP - just because the consumer is not ready to make the transition. The adpotion of the Linux operating system is encouraged but for this exercise it is presented in conjunction with the use (maybe partial) of Windows Vista. Which is not too bad - however monopolistic!
Tempusfugit cannot, at this time, offer on-going general support for your computing needs. However, if a relationship is developed with a client, this maybe pursued at a later stage.
This service is just in the proposal stage. In order to see how the service could be structured it as necassary to set out the conditions under which it might operate.
Looking at some of the search terms that had directed visitors to this website, indicates that there is a desire for computer users to downgrade their Vista PCs to WindowsXP or to install a dual boot of some description. It is not clear, however, if those making the searches are those interested in having someone else perform this configuration for them. They are more than likely able to perform the location and installation of drivers and software for themselves.
In addition, this website is too heavily leveraged on generating traffic from Google. Tempusfugit is not of a mind to participate in promotion of this website - i.e. advertising.
If you are reading this, and you are interested in a service such as this - please contact Tempusfugit.
