The most important thing I should say here is that I DO NOT recommend Asus WebStorage - there are far better solutions available.

Asus Web Storage

This page is an additional website page to my (ever popular) blog posting "Why I gave up on Asus Web Storage"

These notes were made when I evaluated Asus WebStorage after purchasing an Asus computer and wondering if it could be used for my own file sharing. This may have changed since this was written as Asus seem to change the interface on a weekly basis. Maybe this is in response to the fact that there so many critics? One of the most importantissues is that You Do Not Need to sign-up (or rather the party you are sharing with) to download shared files.

In my opinion Asus Web Storage is a scam that Asus use to differentiate their product from the competition
The truth is that it detracts from this and makes them look bad as it does not live up to the product (laptops, Netbooks and motherboards) it is supposed to promote.
Compared to DropBox Asus Web Storage is crap!

See how little I've used - That is because it is so slow!

The eee Storage is slow but it is free. There are comments on the eee users forum that it is just a means of differentiating the eeePC from other Netbooks - which this maybe true but it did seem to serve my needs. Share links supposedly could be generated and removed at will - the share recipient was supposed not need to sign up for the service and the share could be removed after the requester has responded with a confirmation that the file has been downloaded.

This is far from what was experienced with Asus Web Storage.

10G of web storage came with my eeePC 1000HE - As you can see in the small screen-shot above I have not used that much of the 10G of space. That is because the time it took to upload what little was there took too long and timed out many times.

Judging by the searches that hit my blog posting many seem to be finding Asus WebStorage far too slow. Many are looking for reviews, others just want to know what it is all about. If the second point is the case, and one that prospective Asus customers are asking, then this is proof that Asus are "out to lunch" on this one!

The use of Asus web storage has been abandoned in preference to the setup of a Personal Webserver. I use this to share files with those that ask.

Confusing Sharing links

Another reason the use of Asus Webstorage was (as mentioned in the Q and A above) was that the link that was generated by Asus Webstorage was too confusing for the average visitor to comprehend when all they wanted was to download a file from me.

The link itself is not the problem - it is mainly that when a visitor is given this link it is not a simple matter of clicking on the link, when they do they are then presented with a confusing sales pitch from Asus Webstorage in an attempt to get them to sign up for their service!

Compare this with:

tempusfugit.ca - an alternstive to Asus Webstorage for sharing

All the visitor needs to do is click on the file or directory (automatically generated by the webserver) and if they been given permission all they need to do is save the file to their computer.

Admittedly, my sharing link is still somewhat confusing, but this is mainly due to the fact that I have not set up my server to use a domain. It is the "sales pitch" that I have a problem with.
