HPA - Hidden Protected Area - FWBACKUP - FirmWare Backup


This file (utility) is mentioned in the IBM white paper (hpa-aibm.pdf) that describes the Access IBM HPA (type 12) Predesktop Area


The HPA (Hidden Protected Area) is the partitioning on the hard drive that contains the dianostic and recovery data for the RR&R system used by IBM/Lenovo (and others)

If you search for FWBACKUP (or FWRESTOR) you will see that a site called www.snapfiles.com is returned - the file is NOT available from this website.

It may be paranoia or conspiracy theory but tools that use this technology are now associated with Symantec (i.e. PowerQuest DriveImage) - it would not be in thier interest to have tools around so that you can perform these low level tasks without buying a tool such as Norton's Ghost. Snapfiles look like they can easily be bought as they seem to be a product of a CMS design.

Some posters on forums have asked for someone to send them the two files (FWBACKUP.exe and FWRESTOR.exe)
