Some definitions.
General:
- IP - This is used on this site in two ways. w.r.t. DRM it relates to Intelectual Property (all work of a
non-physical nature that is owned by the author or an agent who has paid for it's creation), and;
Internet Protocol - as in IP Addresses - the "postcodes" of the Internet.
- DRM - Digital Rights and Digital Rights Management. - the control and administation of IP
- The PTB - The Powers that be - my colloqeual expression for the owners of IP and Law Makers (Governments and enforcement agancies)
- P2P - Peer to Peer technologies - a.k.a. File Sharing.
- TPMs - Technological Protection Measures
- FUD - Fear Uncertainty and Doubt. - If we can't stop people doing something - let's make them afraid to do it!
- MED-V - Microsoft. ® Enterprise Desktop Virtualization
......application virtualization and streaming solution once known as SoftGrid,
will support 64bit virtualized applications in H1 2010 - MS says that the "Enterprise" should be using MED-V NOT "XP Mode"
- Virtualization - in general. With the release of Windows 7 to the general public - this term will become
front and centre when the "XP Crowd" realise that "XP Mode" is not what they expected it to be!
- SLI is short for Scalable Link Interface. SLI is proprietary to Nvidia
- ATI Crossfire - a technology from the "other" GPU vendor. (if you don't count Intel!)
- The Business Segment - same as the Enterprise.
- MDC - My dad's car goes faster than yours - -
a nonsensical and unprovable statement - this was somewhat invented and/or adopted by Tempusfugit.
- Webonomics - My take on it.
- IMO - This is obvious, but needs to be re-stated - In My Opinion or IMHO (the Humble version)
IT and SAP specific:
- BI - Business Intelligence - (as opposed to business stupidity!)
The Business Segment
Much is made in the press of the abilty for PCs to be able to be used as work-stations,
be part of a network and to enable corporate security. While this is important it really
has little to do with the vast majority of computer users.
The use of the words "professional" and "business" in the description of hardware and particularly
software, compounds the notion. It is implied that those systems with this designation are somehow
better and have more features. In some cases they do.
