Huawei u7519

Huawei u7519 Some Information

Reports of "spotty" service from Wind mobile and the fact that the Huawei u7519 was not that much cheaper than the purchase of the combination of a "pay-as-you-go" phone and an iPod Touch. The later seemed to be a better value so I ended up with a Nokia 5130 and I already own a Touch and an iPad.

The Huawei u7519 DOES NOT FEATURE WiFi or a built-in GPS receiver!

The Brew operating system (example code here) is probably a better bet than the Apple development platform for the iPhone and related products. For those that don't want to "tow-the-line" with Steve Jobs will find that Brew 4.0 is open and you are free to develop and distribute whatever you want without having to adhere to the Apple licensing rules.

BREW 4.0

The BREW operating system is developed by Qualcomm. Download

BREW 4.0 seems to be another one of the "Open-Source" projects that it is expected that the "community" will do all the hard work for the manufacturer. It is not official titled OSS and the applications and platforms are developed using an SDK available from Qualcomm.

There is a developers forum, but as of January 2009 there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of activity apart from postings by the administrator.

Who are Huawei?

Huawei call themselves:

...... a world-leading telecom solutions provider

and.....

Huawei's global R&D centers are located in Silicon Valley and Dallas in USA, Stockholm in Sweden, Moscow in Russia and Bangalore in India in addition to those in Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Shenzhen, Hangzhou and Chengdu in China.

In other words they are a Chinese company that try to make out that they are international. That may well be the case, but if you are concerned about human rights you may want to shop elsewhere!

Very busy in Blockbuster. Not for renting movies but around the Wind Mobile display.

No dummy models for the Huawei, so I had to play with a real one. Slightly smaller than the iPhone and iPod Touch screen about the same, maybe slightly smaller. Controls similar to the Palm Tunsten and menu also but better overall impression than the Palm product.

All looks good. Waiting to let the dust settle.
