It is very unlikely that anyone of consequence is going to read my page on The Psychology of a Windows 7 upgrade, however, as Windows 7 is officially released on the 22nd of this month - here it is. The success of Windows 7 is of great interest as I will be purchasing a new ultra mobile laptop towards the end of 2009. It is preferred that this has Windows 7 pre-installed. However, I have developed a strategy for myself to upgrade to Windows 7 - this initially involved the installation of Win 7 RC on a Netbook but is now centered on the upgrade of my IBM desktop
I may be making too much of the XP-Mode and
Virtualization issues, time will only tell!
Judging by the number of searches for Zoombrowser for Windows 7 and apparent problems with
camerawindow not recognizing older cameras this seems not to be the case.
"torrentprivacy" and "torrentprivacy review" continue to be some of the most searched keywords that find my blog. It is only a matter of time before there are some major cases where either the RIAA or the MPAA (or one of the major studios) launch some mega lawsuits, making examples of "illegal downloaders". Those wondering if there is anything they can do so that they are not the ones that are caught will be visiting more often. Here is my status update on whether the service offered by TP actually does as it claims or whether it is a scam.

This seems like a good time to revisit Spamdexing - the technique used by web authors to get you to visit their website. It is not that tempusfugit does not use some of the techniques (analysis of what visitors seem to be searching for), it is that as I am not selling or promoting a product or service I cannot be accused of stuffing my pages with terms that are similar to competing companies. As there is little point in me using the term "Windows 7" over and over again, as this is such a common string it will not get anyone to visit this website. That being the case, terms such as those relating to specific processors that may or maynot support VT or AMD-V are used, as it is determined that there will be those that have purchased (or are in the process of spec'ing out) Windows 7 computers and may wish to try out XP-Mode.
The seems to be a fair amount of interest in Emulation of 32 bit stuff in 64 bit operating environments. This could be due to the preponderence of 64 bit operating systems that are currently being sold in the stores. Both Vista 64 and the upcoming Windows 7 are likey to have more of a thrust on 64 bit operation as it will allow the use of greater amounts of RAM. It seems the normal that laptops are being shipped with 4G of RAM - we have reached the value price-point where RAM is cheap enough and the manufacturers have run out of things to differentiate their products from the competiton. i.e. "Buy this notebook as it comes with 4G of RAM while this other one only has 2G". You can't utilize that amount of RAM unless you have a 64 bit O/S.
The Apple iTouch and the BBC iPlayer downloader - the mobile downloader seems to have broken, and I have a theory to why!

It would appear that the Intel processor identifier utility downloaded from the Intel website is only 32 bit!
Having tried to pair an Apple iTouch with a Bluetooth headset it seems to be apparent that the profile used in the Touch is A2DP and not some of the "lesser" profile. It is presumed, and somewhat confirmed by the staff in my local Apple store, that the iPhone uses a different protocol than the iTouch. This is some ways makes sense as the iTouch is an iPod variant and as such is targeted at an audio market as opposed to a phone one. The Apple website does not make this clear, as it doesn't regarding the versions of iPhones and iTouch - the main confusion lay in the fact that "3G' refers to a cellular network standard International Mobile Telecommunications-2000 (IMT-2000), NOT a generation of the iPhone!
In the run-up to the release of Windows 7 to the general public it is becoming increasingly clear that
the manufacturers of computer equipment had no intention of supporting XP-Mode for consumer product. The
vast majority of equipment on the shelves is not capable of hardware virtualization. Whether it had been
determined that it would have been too great a headache to field problems with this feature in light of the
fact that is was a new operating system anyway, it remains to be seen what will transpire with this apparent
stance that they are taking. It may backfire on them as I have seen a marked increase in the number of searches
for information regarding whether particular processors support Intel's VT or AMD's AMD-V.
In addition, a list of model numbers of computer equipment that will not support XP-Mode will be published on this
website - this is so that they can be found when many will be making searches in the future when they find out that
the new computer that they have purchased cannot run this Microsoft advertised feature!

Many searches seem to being made as "no disk drive found" and drived not found when trying to install Windows XP as a dual boot
As expected there have been a new swathe of Notebooks that have been released in conjuction with the release of Windows 7. These notebooks seem to have a mixture of processors that some support Virtualization Technologies (Intel VT, AMD-V and SVM). In the case of AMD the majortity of the notebooks that were on sale before Windows 7 did not support AMD-V, there were a number of processors that were listed on the AMD website that did but they were not available in product - this seems to be changing (as predicted).
HP have could out with the "dirty shirt" and have released a line of Netbooks with N270 processors and
Windows 7 Starter Edition. While this version of Windows 7 is apparently full featured, as compared to
Home Premium, it does not support virtualization.
