Using a VPN to overcome Geo-IP restrictions

This is the easiest way to enable the access to programming that is restricted to the geographic location for which it was intended.

As a historical background, work in this field started off as an academic exercise it getting round the Geo-IP restrictions used by the BBC using Vidalia Tor and exiting in the UK on servers with ExitNodes located there. The webmaster has perfected this technique and it provides a FREE method of accessing the iPlayer content.

During the research it came to light that there were a number of services being offered that allowed subscribers to pay for a VPN connection to the UK and other Geo locations.

The useage here is not specific to any one particular VPN provider, the techniques and observations will be the same for all providers. No one provider will have the "best" solution, some will have better customer service than others.

If you need assistance in which VPN service to use - please contact the webmaster.

The use of a VPN is far easier to configure than using Vidalia Tor

A VPN connection to a server in a country located such as the UK so that you can access the services of the BBC and other stations on the ITV and others is just a matter of paying the subscription and configuration of your computers settings to use that connection.

Some VPN services offer what they call "Dialers" which allow the configuration with little or no technical expertise.
